Pro Democracy Movement of Iran (PMDI)

What is the Pro Democracy Movement of Iran - PDMI?

PDMI is a grassroots organic movement and not an organization. PDMI is an INDEPENDENT entity aiming to support groups, organizations and individuals who are fighting to overthrow the Islamic Republic and establish a secular democracy in Iran. PDMI is not affiliated with any political groups or organizations. PDMI operates on Distributive Leadership principals where the leadership is shared between two or more individuals.

Arash Irandoost, the founder, is not a part of any past or existing political parties and his sole mission and priority is Iran and unity amongst Iranian opposition groups. This is very hard for some Iranians to fathom, accept and understand that in fact there are some Iranians who have actually put Iran first and their political ideology and personal agendas second. Dr. Irandoost believes that it is ultimately the people of Iran who must decide what type of government Iran should have, under a free and democratic elections.

Ever since the takeover of Iran by the Islamic movement over three decades ago, we have witnessed an influx Iranians migrating to other countries. A large majority have taken residence in the United States. Exiled Iranians, Diaspora, migrants, in spite of enormous hardships have adapted well to their second home and maintained their cultural, political and social links with their motherland, and their accomplishments in their host country, comparatively speaking has surpassed other minority groups.

Despite our successes in the United States, however, we are very much troubled and concerned by the troubles back home. We are troubled by a corrupt and incompetent anti-Iran and anti-Iranian occupier regime, that attempts to destroy our cultural and historical heritage and downplay our proud past and glorious civilization. Not only does this regime commit crimes and violates basic human rights of Iranians at home but is considered a major threat to the civilized world. Regime’s hatred of America, anti-Semitism and chants of “Death to America” and “Death to Israel” by its hired thugs are indeed a source of disgrace and shame for us Iranian-Americans!

The Islamic government has amassed a complex network of individuals and organizations who are pressing forward aggressively and deceptively to influence the new U.S. administration’s policy towards the Islamic Republic of Iran. Spearheaded by a furtive partnership between the National Iranian-American Council (NIAC), CASMII, the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), so-called Iran experts, university professors, cultural centers and other organizations are serving as mouthpieces for the mullahs’ party line. This network includes well-known American diplomats, congressional representatives, figures from academia and the think tank world.

Under such conditions, there is a pressing need for individuals, groups and organizations with requisite expertise and belief that can present a more realist and accurate picture of current events and help expose the blatant violations of basic human rights in Iran. It is for this reason that the Pro-Democracy Movement of Iran (PDMI) was founded by Dr. Arash Irandoost.

PDMI is a community of Iranians and friends of Iran (lawyers, doctors, engineers, programmers, writers, human rights activists, researchers, educators, academicians, TV and Radio announcers, political activists) united by a set of common and core values. We aim to encourage Iranians and Americans who have a passion for Iran, believe in freedom and democratic principles and respect human rights to join hands and unite.

PDMI is first and foremost an educational and human rights organization and not a political one, but welcomes measured and seasoned active and capable leaders who can set their political differences aside and put Iran first.

We believe that Islamic Republic cannot be reformed and regime change is the only option for Iran. We are anti-war and for world peace. We want an Iran who can live in peace and harmony with its neighbors, an Iran that can join and contribute positively to the world community. We demand the separation of mosque and state and aspire for a secular and democratic Iran.

The religious rulers of Iran have offered noting constructive to the world and have inflicted nothing but misery on the Iranian people. Thirty three years of Caliphate style barbaric rule has clearly shown that it is not compatible with democratic principles. Under the Islamic laws, Iran’s rulers have routinely jailed, hanged, raped, tortured, and killed innocent Iranians.

PDMI in Summary

•An organic and grassroots community of freedom loving Iranians united under a common vision, mission, goal for actionable strategic and concrete steps
•Considers religion a private and personal matter and respect all religions.
•Is calling for joint action by all democratic voices under the banner of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
•Believes in regime change in Iran is the only alternative for a free, democratic and secular Iran.
•Believes that religion and state should never mix. The mix of state and religion in modern Iran has provided the Islamic Republic with the pretext for the most violent forms of political suppression and Human Right abuses in the name of religion.
•Any dialogue with the Islamic Republic is futile. The Islamic Republic’s Constitution is nothing but a discriminatory, flawed and anti-democratic document written with the specific purpose of safeguarding the Islamic rule, giving the ultimate power to Iran’ clergy and treating Iran’s women, religious and ethnic minorities as second class citizens.
•Democratic elections, respect for human rights and suspension of the enrichment of uranium for military purposes should be a prerequisite if such discussions are to take place.
•We support the toughest (non-food and medicine) sanctions against the Islamic dictatorship.
•The current system of government and its Constitution are not adequate to address the needs of a modern society.
•The current government of the Islamic Republic of Iran is an illegitimate and discriminatory government.
•The Supreme Leader “Velayat e Fagih” as (the ultimate arbiter of right and wrong) is undemocratic and does not represent the will of the Iranian people.
•The “so-called” elections in Iran are nothing but a sham and are aimed at the survival and legitimization of a corrupt and unpopular theocratic regime.
•The mass disqualification of candidates by a group of non-elected clergy and selection of hand-picked individuals with questionable and often criminal backgrounds is unlawful, illegitimate and undemocratic.

PDMI envisions:
A democratically elected form of government through a referendum (supervised by international observes) is the only way to represent the will of the Iranian masses towards a free, secular, democratic and independent Iran.

PDMI
• Supports the toughest forms of (non-food and medicine) sanctions against the Islamic government. 75% of Iran’s economy is controlled by the IRGC. We do not subscribe to the propaganda by regime apologists that sanctions hurt the “ordinary” people. To the contrary, regime agents disguised at lobbyists are hard at work to ease sanctions so that the super-rich Iranian-American businessmen are allowed to purchase and sell sensitive surveillance technologies, oil and gas equipment, military gear to the IRI that will use it crush pro-democracy and freedom seeking Iranians.
• Aims to expose and confront regime lobbyists and apologists of all stripes.
• Views the United States and the West as our allies and aims to establish mutually beneficial, respectful, friendly and cooperative relationship with the West, America and Americans.
• Aims to utilize the English speaking media and community to express its views and interests
• Aims to educate by publishing articles, conducting research, holding informational sessions, workshops and conferences on Iran and the US foreign policy towards Iran

Why some Iranian opposition organizations have not been successful:
• They have been too busy fighting each other rather than fighting the regime
• They were formed first and recruited leadership and members second
• They were not transparent
• Their organizations were not officially registered
• They did not have their financial books in order
• They did not have proper expertise in key areas (politics-media-technology-business-legal)
• They exaggerated about themselves, numbers and activities
• They did not propose a solid plan with clear vision, mission, goals and objectives with actionable steps
• They mainly talked rather than acted
• They did not fully utilize the modern technological tools
• The lacked a clear vision, business and organizational plan
• They did not trust each other
• They did not celebrate each other’s successes and saw each other as allies
• They did not see each other as a team and saw each other as competition for prestige, position and power

What hinders us as Iranian Opposition:
Lack of scientific procedures and processes (surveys, data, statistics)
Lack of demand for accountability (slanders)
Biased-Ideology, self serving agendas, individual first and Iran second (self-promotion)
Cultural courtesies clouds our objectivity and frank discussion (taarof is a blessing and a curse)
Rumor driven mind set

PDMI Functions
Advocates Distributive leadership
Utilizes existing infrastructures (do not invent the wheel)
Serves as a bridge to unite existing organizations and structures
Supports qualified reputable transparent existing organizations and individuals
Helps form a coalition and if there is consent form an organization representing mutual points of interests
Unites people with expertise in legal, political, public relations, financial, technological, social and scholarly matters

PDMI
Wants foreign governments STOP appeasing and supporting the IRI
Asks for their moral and strategic support, but do not want their direct interference in our country’s affairs
Is pro-West
Has no issues with Arabs or Israelis, but condemn the occupation of Iran 1,400 years ago
See a big distinction between the Iranian people and the current government (PDMI views them as occupiers)
Seek regime change and no change within the regime
Sees territorial integrity as non-negotiable

Our Opponents (IRI Apologists and lobbyists) Viewpoints

1. The regime is a programmatic entity and it has adequate tools for reform within itself
2. Dialogue and Diplomacy is the only approach
3. Sanctions hurt “Ordinary” people
4. Iran’s nuclear program is for peaceful purposes
5. Iranians do not want another revolution
6. Iranian opposition groups are neo-cons and war mongers

Their Strategy: Use human rights as an excuse to remove sanctions
Scare Iranians of the threat of imminent war with the West
Slander Iranians opposition groups by false accusations
Threaten Iranian opposition groups by lawsuits in order to intimidate them into silence

PDMI Code of Conduct-A PDMI Professional:
Views religion is a private matter
Does not mix religion and State
Does not exaggerate -states the facts-based on data and research
Is anti war, pro-west
Is polite, assertive, courteous, determined, diplomatic, respectful of others
Does not see the Iranian opposition as our competition but as a potential ally
Strives for good communication skills: Know what you want to say and why, How will you say it? Listen, and reach understanding, agreement and consensus
Does not attack or insult any opposition groups
Fights IRI and its Lobby and apologists
Does not resort to and use profanity
Does not have any issues with Arabs or Israelis, but condemn the occupation of Iran 1,400 years ago
Arrives at collectively, act individually

Arash Irandoost

Dr. Arash Irandoost (pen name) is the founder of Pro-Democracy Movement of Iran (PDMI) which focuses on social, political and current events pertaining to Iran. He is an independent, non-partisan Iranian-American pro-democracy activist who works to inform and educate about the threat posed by Islamic Republic and radical Islam. He investigates and documents human rights abuses by the Islamic republic in Iran and aims to raise international awareness of human rights violations and international human standards inside Iran. Dr. Irandoost maintains close contact with dissidents inside Iran as well as Iranian pro-democracy organizations and individuals outside of Iran.

Dr. Irandoost believes that Islamic Republic cannot be reformed and that regime change is the only viable option for Iran. He maintains that rulers of Iran are intent on developing nuclear weapons and any attempts at diplomacy and dialogue is fruitless and emboldens the brutal regime to continue its violation of basic human rights.

Dr. Irandoost also writes about a complex network of individuals and organizations with ties to the clerical regime in Tehran that are pressing forward in seeming synchrony to influence the U.S. administration’s policy towards the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Dr. Irandoost cautions about the danger of Islamic Republic’s fanatical and radical ideology. He has been published on numerous online and print publications such as New Media Journal, the American Thinker, Faith Freedom International, Free Republic, Israel National News, Right Side News, Kurd Net, Radio Farda, Shahrvand, www.Iraniansforum.com and The Global Politician. He has appeared on various Farsi speaking radio and television programs discussing issues affecting Iran and the United States.
